In the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns and environmental challenges, Sierra Leone's farming communities are on the front lines of climate change. Our Climate Resilience Initiative is equipping farmers with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to adapt and thrive in this changing landscape.
The Climate Challenge
Farmers in Sierra Leone are experiencing:
- Erratic rainfall patterns and prolonged droughts
- Increased frequency of extreme weather events
- Soil degradation and loss of arable land
- Shifting growing seasons affecting crop yields
"The rains don't come when they used to, and when they do, they're either too much or too little. Our traditional farming calendar doesn't work anymore. The training we've received has helped us adapt our practices to these new realities." - Alhaji B., Farmer in Tonkolili District
Our Climate-Smart Solutions
Drought-Resistant Crops
Introducing and promoting crop varieties that can withstand prolonged dry spells and require less water, ensuring food security even in challenging conditions.
Agroforestry Systems
Integrating trees with crops to improve soil health, enhance biodiversity, and create microclimates that protect against extreme weather.
Water Conservation
Implementing rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, and other water-efficient techniques to make the most of available water resources.
Soil Regeneration
Promoting organic farming practices, cover cropping, and composting to restore soil health and increase its water-holding capacity.
Farmer Field Schools
Our innovative Farmer Field School program brings together farmers to learn and experiment with climate-smart techniques:
Hands-On Learning
Farmers learn by doing in demonstration plots
Peer-to-Peer Exchange
Farmers share traditional knowledge and new techniques
Impact Monitoring
Tracking progress and adapting approaches
Success Stories
From Struggle to Success: Isatu's Story
After years of declining yields, Isatu joined our climate resilience program. Through training in agroforestry and water conservation, she has transformed her small plot into a thriving, climate-smart farm that supports her family and serves as a model for her community.
"I never thought I could grow so much food with so little rain. Now I'm teaching others what I've learned."
Community-Based Adaptation
We're working with communities to develop localized climate adaptation plans that address their specific challenges:
- Community risk assessments and vulnerability mapping
- Early warning systems for extreme weather
- Diversification of livelihoods to reduce climate risk
- Reforestation and ecosystem restoration projects
